The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for a pivotal Week 8 matchup against the Cleveland Browns, with first place in the AFC North at stake. After escaping Paris with a 16-10 win over the New Orleans Saints, head coach Mike McCarthy addressed several key topics during his Monday press conference, including the evolving roles of his running backs, an adjustment to the offensive line, and the team’s ongoing need for improvement.

McCarthy’s comments offered insight into how he envisions Pittsburgh’s offense operating as the season progresses and how he expects his players to respond to areas that need work. From the growing partnership between Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle to Spencer Anderson’s expanded role in jumbo packages, the Steelers are finding different ways to maximize their personnel.

Here are three key takeaways from McCarthy’s latest press conference as Pittsburgh turns its attention to Cleveland.

Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle’s Duo Is Popping

Warren and Dowdle were productive on Sunday. Although some fans may prefer Warren’s explosive plays and clamor for him to receive more touches, he continues to lead the backfield in volume. Meanwhile, Dowdle’s bruising running style has proven effective over the past two weeks. Their respective workloads and production against the Saints were as follows:

  • Jaylen Warren: 21 touches, 6.5 yards per touch
  • Rico Dowdle: 15 touches, 5.7 yards per touch

McCarthy’s vision for the backfield is beginning to take shape, as he explained during his Monday press conference.

“Jaylen’s hot as a firecracker. Definitely want him to touch the football … When we signed Rico [Dowdle], we knew we had two really big time backs we could lean on. This was the 1-2 punch I was referring to back in training camp,” McCarthy told the media.

There’s a Role for Spencer Anderson

The Steelers also made an interesting adjustment on Sunday by deploying jumbo packages. Specifically, they inserted benched right guard Spencer Anderson into the lineup as a sixth offensive lineman in those formations. McCarthy praised Anderson, making it clear that the young lineman still has a role to play on this team.

“[Spencer Anderson] carries a lot of value for our football team, especially up front,” McCarthy said.

Anderson logged 13 snaps against the Saints, including one pass-blocking snap and 12 run-blocking snaps. His usage suggests Pittsburgh values his ability to contribute as an additional blocker, particularly when the offense wants to establish the running game.

McCarthy Isn’t Ignoring the Issues

The Steelers aren’t a perfect team, and McCarthy understands that. He continues to demand improvement each week, but his comments Monday offered an interesting perspective on accountability and the standards he expects his players to uphold. Perhaps this is the first ever… McCarthyism?

“You really get what you are tolerant to out there.” McCarthy said.

The Steelers haven’t shied away from making corrections under McCarthy. Whether the issue involves play-calling, execution, or personnel, McCarthy and his staff have shown a willingness to address problems head-on throughout the season. His comments reinforce the idea that a team’s shortcomings often reflect what its coaches and players are willing to accept.

As Pittsburgh prepares for a crucial divisional matchup, McCarthy’s message is straightforward: the Steelers must hold themselves to a higher standard if they want to keep winning.
