The hiring of McCarthy was met with a lot of skepticism, but he has turned this roster into a team capable of making real noise. McCarthy is the perfect head coach to complement veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, as the duo has a lot of history together from their time with the Green Bay Packers.
The two seem to be on the same page now after struggling to do so early in the season. The Steelers are beginning to gain the recognition of the rest of the NFL as the team rides a four-game win streak into the bye week.
This current Steelers team under McCarthy looks like it has a different swagger to it than previous years. The issues that deflated this team in 2025 have vanished, and some of the biggest weaknesses have been cleaned up completely.
Pittsburgh's offensive line has looked like one of the best in the NFL and has played better than any unit Steelers fans have seen in years. The defense has been ruthless towards opposing offenses and the star-studded pash rushing group has been dominant. McCarthy seems like the exact kind of coach this team needed as it attempts to make a Super Bowl run with its plethora of talented veterans.
During a recent episode of The OG Football Show, long-time sports broadcaster Trey Wingo gave McCarthy major credit for the turnaround that he has led this team through.
"The way Mike McCarthy has handled all the backlash after the Browns game because of the miscommunication has been great," Wingo said. "He has really set a tone for this team. It is a true testament to his transparency and the understanding of his team."
The players seem to be rallying around McCarthy and it's happening at the perfect time. Pittsburgh has looked dominant over the last month or so, with the team winning the line of scrimmage in every game. The offensive and defensive lines have been playing outstanding football and that has become the Steelers' identity.
The Steelers have been able to run the ball as efficiently as any team in the NFL while not allowing opposing offenses to breathe when they have possession. This team looks built to win postseason games.
McCarthy has also done an amazing job of building a solid coaching staff around him. Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham has been outstanding at getting the Steelers' star defenders in position to make plays.
Plenty of defensive players are having their best seasons in the Black and Gold and helping the team look the best it has in many seasons. While the Steelers still have a lot of work ahead of them in 2026, the future looks very bright.
The Steelers' offense has looked like a completely different unit compared to the 2025 season, and McCarthy could be the reason for that. He has been able to get a lot of players involved in the offense despite not having any true star pass catchers.
No. 1 wide receiver DK Metcalf has struggled immensely this season while the two guys behind him, Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson, are on Injured Reserve (IR).
This has not stopped McCarthy and Rodgers from getting contributions from other areas of the offense, such as the team's talented tight end duo of Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington, as well as star running back Jaylen Warren, who is in the middle of a career year. This offense has been built to handle hardships that come its way.
