Steelers' Mitchell Trubisky: 'We’ve built a great quarterback room so far'

Earlier this month, Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Matt Canada confirmed what was essentially already public knowledge when he said that veteran quarterback and free-agent acquisition Mitchell Trubisky was comfortably atop the depth chart ahead of career backup Mason Rudolph and first-round draft pick and Pittsburgh Panthers product Kenny Pickett.

The Steelers also took a flier on Chris Oladokun in the seventh round of this year's draft.

Trubisky will enter the summer months leading whatever quarterback competition the Steelers plan on staging during training camp and the preseason, and the 27-year-old recently spoke highly of his understudies.

"It’s exciting for Kenny that he was able to go from Pitt to Pittsburgh, and we’ve built a great quarterback room so far," Trubisky told Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, according to Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "It’s been awesome working with him, Mason, and Chris. I know people like to run with those headlines, but it really wasn’t that big of a deal. It didn’t matter who was in my quarterback room. I was gonna come in with the mindset that I’m here to compete and lead a team to go win games."

Interestingly, Trubisky added he'd like for others in that QB room to speak up more once everybody reconvenes for training camp.

"[Quarterbacks coach Mike] Sullivan says it all the time, a noisy quarterback room is a good quarterback room. Because you’re having those conversations and you’re talking good football," Trubisky explained. "You want those conversations because they stimulate growth. They stimulate learning opportunities within the room, so that’s why you want a noisy room, you know?"

It was widely assumed in March that Pittsburgh signed Trubisky to at least temporarily replace future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger as the club's QB1. As things stand today, the former Chicago Bears starter and Buffalo Bills backup seems to be the favorite to beat out Rudolph and Pickett before September rolls around.
