Steelers New CB Anthony Averett Could Prove To Be A Very Powerful Addition To The Roster: 'Been There And Done That'
Lucas Peltier-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers recently initiated their rookie minicamp, where amidst a sea of fresh faces, one seasoned player stood out: former Baltimore Ravens defensive back, Anthony Averett. Despite his veteran status, Averett seized the opportunity to vie for a coveted spot on the Steelers' roster. His performance during the tryout caught the team's attention, leading to his official signing on Sunday.

With his signing, Averett now gears up for training camp, where he'll engage in a fierce competition for a roster spot. The Steelers, facing a void in the defensive back position, recognize the value of Averett's experience and skillset. He understands the gravity of the opportunity before him—a chance to reignite his NFL journey with a storied franchise like the Steelers.

Offering his perspective on Pittsburgh's decision to bring Averett on board, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly provided insights during his segment on 93.7 The Fan. Kaboly shed light on the organization's mindset regarding Averett's addition, hinting at the strategic significance behind the move.

"That’s something that jumps off the board when you are looking at the roster of rookie minicamp. He even said, ‘I didn’t even think I could be invited to rookie tryout camp,’ because he was a six-year veteran. When you bring a six-year veteran in, you are signing him. You pretty much knew it, so you go and talk to him right away."

Kaboly emphasized that the decision to sign Averett stems from his valuable NFL experience. While not necessarily a standout player during his tenure with the Ravens, Averett made a significant impact. Kaboly acknowledged that injuries have been a concern for Averett, causing some teams to approach him cautiously. Nevertheless, Kaboly sees Averett's signing as a boon for the Steelers—a testament to his potential to contribute positively to the team.

“He’s just been battling with some injuries here the past couple of years that have kept people away from him. He wasn’t a star in Baltimore, but he was decent. It gives you a cheap, depth option, veteran option right now. It doesn’t mean he’s going to start or anything, but it gives you a guy who has been there and done that for the past five or six years.”

Averett boasts a six-season NFL tenure, notably dividing his 2023 between the San Francisco 49ers and the Detroit Lions. Unfortunately for Averett, he didn't see any game action during the 2023 season. He was on both teams' practice squads and also dealt with injuries during that time.

Initially drafted by the Ravens in the fourth round, Averett spent four seasons with the team before transitioning to the Las Vegas Raiders, where he shifted to safety. With 51 games under his belt, including 27 starts, Averett's career highlights include three interceptions, 23 passes defensed, and 114 combined tackles.

Steelers' Anthony Averett Might Have A Chance In Pittsburgh

While Averett hasn't achieved star status, his tenure with the Ravens showcased his value as a reliable role player in their defense. Now, as he joins the Steelers, Averett's presence could offer a strategic boost to their defensive lineup in 2024. With determination fueling his efforts, he'll fiercely compete for a coveted roster spot during training camp, eyeing a chance to contribute on the field for the Steelers.

For Averett, Pittsburgh represents a promising opportunity to reignite his NFL journey, especially after sitting out the entire 2023 regular season staying on practice squads. With hopes pinned on a career resurgence, Averett aims to make a meaningful impact in the Steel City. Given the team's need for depth in their secondary, his performance during camp could pave the way for a significant role in the upcoming season.
