Steelers, NFL scrap Paris fan gathering amid civil unrest

The Pittsburgh Steelers have canceled a planned fan event in Paris because of security concerns surrounding recent civil unrest, but the NFL remains committed to playing its historic matchup against the New Orleans Saints as scheduled Sunday.

The team’s “Steelers House” gathering was set to take place at a bar in the Bastille neighborhood, an area that has experienced recent disruptions. The Steelers and the NFL announced the decision Thursday, emphasizing that preparations for the game at Stade de France remain on track.

“Following recent events in the Bastille neighborhood, and after careful consideration, we felt it appropriate not to move forward with the planned Steelers House fan event in Paris,” the league said in a message to fans.

According to Associated Press, the Steelers also described the cancellation as a precaution, noting that the NFL is coordinating with local authorities and partners on security arrangements for the game.

NFL faces a security test during historic Paris debut

Sunday’s matchup will mark the NFL’s first regular-season game in France, making the situation more consequential than a routine change to a fan event. The league has been working to build its international audience, and Paris represents another major step in its overseas expansion.

However, the decision to cancel the gathering does not mean the game itself is in jeopardy. NFL officials have said the contest will proceed as planned, with heightened security measures coordinated with French authorities.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday that the league had made preparations for the situation and remained in contact with officials in France. The game will be played at Stade de France in Saint-Denis, outside central Paris.

According to Associated Press report, the NFL vice president of global events Nicki Ewell also said no other league fan events had been affected. The NFL is adjusting its plans around a specific location rather than announcing a broader shutdown of its Paris activities.

The cancellation nevertheless highlights the logistical challenges of staging a major international sporting event amid public unrest. The league must balance its ambitions to grow the game globally with the safety of players, staff and visiting fans.

For now, the Steelers-Saints matchup remains scheduled for Sunday. The canceled fan event is a significant change to the weekend’s festivities, but it is not an announcement, for now, that the NFL’s Paris debut will be postponed.
