The Pittsburgh Steelers' offense has a much different outlook two weeks removed from the NFL Draft. That was made a reality after this week when they traded star wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys.
Pickens gets a new home while the Steelers lose a major playmaker despite the internal hurdles they faced in managing his personality.
This sudden change combined with the continued uncertainty around the quarterback position have fans questioning where they will turn for production through the air. However, the Steelers should not be relying on their air attack given their current offensive construction.
Arthur Smith's offense projects to be run-heavy again. During the draft, the Steelers found a player they feel could become an key player for their backfield in Iowa product Kaleb Johnson.
Friday, the Steelers made things official with their new running back and signed him to a four-year contract. Smith had nothing but glowing praise for Johnson following his selection.
"Really explosive running back that we spent some time with on a 30 visit here... One of the more instinctive backs that I've watched in a couple of years coming out of the draft."
Last season, his final campaign at Iowa, Johnson tallied 240 carries for 1,537 yards and 21 touchdowns. Those all marked career highs and contributed to the Steelers' interest in him on Day 2 of the draft.
"Perfect fit regardless of whatever run scheme you're running. He ran multiple at Iowa. Really impressive as a volume runner as the game went on.... We think he's a great culture fit. Obviously extremely fired up to get Kaleb in here."
Johnson will be splitting duties with Jaylen Warren whose production regressed significantly last year, dropping from 5.3 yards per carry to 4.3. If the more experienced back cannot hold up his end or upgrade his production, Johnson has the chance to take on an even bigger role in this offense.
That will need to be settled on the field, but Johnson is set up and has the support of the coaching staff to make a real impact in his first season.
