Steelers’ Omar Khan Offers Clarity About A Reunion With Cam Sutton: 'It Was A Good Experience'
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers have wrapped up another draft, leaving many observers impressed with their selections. Steelers General Manager Omar Khan has become a fan favorite, with Steelers faithful eagerly awaiting his every word.

Recently, Khan joined the Randy Baumann and the DVE Morning Show to dissect the draft proceedings. During his appearance, he addressed the rumors swirling around a potential reunion with former Steelers cornerback Cam Sutton, shedding light on their discussions and hinting at future plans involving him.

“You know we will see. We did meet with Cam a couple of weeks ago. It was more about the situation here and seeing how he was doing. We spent six years with Cam and they were a good six years with Cam. It was a good experience. He obviously had the opportunity to go to Detroit and had to make a business decision.”

Sutton is a great player and he had some solid years with the Steelers. However, his ongoing legal issues may play a role in the Steelers not brining him back to Pittsburgh.

Khan emphasized Sutton as a potential candidate for the cornerback position, while also acknowledging the team's existing depth in that area. He expressed confidence in Cory Trice Jr. and Darius Rush, highlighting their potential to elevate their game and contribute quality reps, particularly in the nickel position. Additionally, Khan singled out undrafted free agent Beanie Bishop Jr. as another promising option for the nickel role.

Continuing his discussion on the cornerback position, Khan went into the team's depth and the various players poised to make an impact in the upcoming season.

“I will say this. I do like the depth at the position. There are some young guys that are going to compete and have traits to be really good nickel corners. I really like that group. We will see what the future holds.”

While Khan expresses confidence in the Steelers' cornerback depth, many fans remain skeptical. The trade involving Diontae Johnson for Donte Jackson has bolstered hopes, as Jackson is expected to make a significant impact in the upcoming 2024 season. Additionally, there is optimism surrounding Joey Porter Jr., who showed promise during his rookie season in 2023 and is anticipated to further elevate his performance this year.

However, beyond these players, the Steelers' cornerback roster appears thin, prompting speculation about the potential addition of Sutton following his release from the Detroit Lions due to legal issues. While Khan acknowledges the possibility, he remains less concerned than fans, expressing confidence in the team's ability to cultivate talent and make significant strides in the cornerback position.

Steelers’ Ryan Watts Could Be A Sneaky Impact Player As A Rookie

In the draft, the Steelers aimed to improve their cornerback room by drafting Ryan Watts during the sixth round. Despite flying somewhat under the radar, Watts carries potential that hasn't gone unnoticed. While some analysts categorize him more as a safety, there's a prevailing belief in his ability to make an immediate impact as a rookie for the team. It's a rarity for a third-day pick to step up and contribute significantly in their rookie season.

However, given the current state of the roster, Watts stands poised to seize special teams opportunities and possibly carve out a role on defense. The Steelers value his versatility, as he's capable of playing both nickel and safety positions. Moreover, his consistent involvement in special teams during his senior season at Texas underscores his dedication and work ethic.

Khan's confidence in the roster, particularly the young talent at cornerback, sets an optimistic tone for the upcoming 2024 season. Steelers fans eagerly await the season's kickoff, hopeful for the impact these promising players will bring to the team.
