The Pittsburgh Steelers have some obvious areas of concern with the way that the roster is currently constructed. It is no secret that wide receiver is one of the weakest positions on the team. The only guys at the position that are under contract for the 2026 season are DK Metcalf, Ben Skowronek, and Roman Wilson. Metcalf is the only one out of that trio that is a significant factor on the offensive side of the ball. Skowronek is one of the best special teamers in the league, while Wilson struggled to see the field during his second season in the NFL.
Metcalf will be a factor in the passing game in 2026, but that is about the only thing that could be said with certainty about the Steelers' current wide receiver group. Skowronek will contribute in his own way, while Wilson is a complete wild card. Many fans are rooting for him and hoping that he can find his footing in the league, but it remains to be seen what he can truly do in the NFL. He was a healthy scratch at times during the 2025 season despite being productive nearly every time that he was put on the football field.
General Manager Omar Khan spoke to the media on Tuesday when he was asked about Wilson.

Wilson made some plays when he was on the field, but it was clear that he was not in the favor of the coaching staff and/or quarterback Aaron Rodgers. It came out after the season had come to a close that some coaches and players had issues with Wilson's professionalism, which is hopefully something that gets worked on before training camp in 2026.
Wilson has had a rough go of it in the NFL thus far. He missed essentially his entire rookie season in 2024 due to injury, and the year was basically a red-shirt season for him. He seemed to be doing well in training camp ahead of the 2025 season, but Rodgers (or someone else), did not like or trust him. That made it hard for him to see the field once the regular season began, although he seemed to be the only wide receiver on the roster that could consistently get separation.
The young wide receiver finished his second season with 12 catches for 166 yards and two touchdowns while playing in just 13 games. He should benefit from the new coaching staff coming into Pittsburgh as it is will almost be a fresh start for him. Fans just need to hope that if Rodgers comes back, the two can get on the same page and get over their differences that might have gotten in the way in 2025.
Wilson should have a chance to be a consistent contributor on offense for Pittsburgh in 2026. It seems like Calvin Austin III won't be returning as he is scheduled to hit free agency and could sign elsewhere. This opens up a spot in the wide receiver rotation, and Wilson should be given the first chance to take it. He showed a ton of potential in 2025 despite the limited production. His routes were clean, and he consistently got separation. It was a bit bizarre that he was one of the only players on the roster that could do that, yet he was largely kept off the field.
