The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the offseason with their quarterback position being the most glaring area to be addressed. Exactly a week out from the start of the 2025 NFL Draft that reality remains unchanged.
Pittsburgh did reunite with Mason Rudolph through free agency though many feel his skills are more suited for a backup role rather than at QB1. At best, the Steelers are looking at Rudolph serving as a bridge to their next franchise quarterback.
Russell Wilson and Justin Fields both started for the Steelers last season but have since left in free agency. Initial free agency buzz connected the team to Aaron Rodgers though that situation and his uncertain future has settled those rumors.
That leaves the draft with not many enticing rookie options in this year's class. However, the Steelers chose to meet with the widely viewed No. 2 quarterback prospect Shedeur Sanders last week.
Following that interaction, Sanders told Kay Adams that he "connected with all the coaches and it was real fun." But it seems the Steelers did not view the meeting in the same light as NFL insider Aaron Wilson details.
Wilson went on to add that the information he gathered was not in attempt to cause a Sanders' slide on draft night for Pittsburgh to come away with a steal on misdirection.
Most information will not impact Sanders at this point because his draft stock is so volatile. His mystery as a prospect could find him anywhere between No. 1 to No. 32 in the first round.
For Steelers fans, this is an unfortunate revelation since the team is simply running out of options to find a starting quarterback. Jaxson Dart has gained some steam and he could draw some interest from Pittsburgh early in the draft.
Oh, so how is Aaron Rodgers doing? Where does he fit into all of this?
Other than that, any other quarterback selection would be a hard sell to be the team's starter. More than likely, they would need to surpass Rudolph through the offseason. Four seasons already spent in the Steel City certainly give the veteran an edge there.
While the disconnect here is uncertain, the Steelers either found something about his profile concerning or they are simply getting too picky in this process.
Regardless, the time is ticking on them to nail down this position for next season. Otherwise, they will face significant challenges in having the rest of the roster uplift a compromised position.
