The Steelers placed Sebastian Joseph-Day on injured reserve on Thursday, per a team announcement. The veteran defensive tackle for at least four games after suffering a triceps injury, presumably in Pittsburgh’s Week 6 loss to the Buccaneers.
Joseph-Day, 31, appeared in the Steelers’ first six games this season with 10 tackles (one for loss), one quarterback hit, and zero sacks on a 29% defensive snap share. His injury will hold him out through Week 11 due to Pittsburgh’s Week 9 bye.
The Steelers signed Joseph-Day to a two-year, $11MM deal in free agency to bolster their defensive line. His role was relatively small early on, but he has seen more playing time since second-year defensive tackle Derrick Harmon was placed on injured reserve.
This will be Joseph-Day’s first multi-game absence since 2021. The eight-year veteran began his NFL career in 2019 as a Rams sixth-round pick and appeared in every game for his first two seasons. A torn pectoral ended his 2021 season after just seven games, but he recovered to play 16 games in each of the following two seasons. Joseph-Day then appeared in all 17 games for the Titans in 2024 and 2025.
Rookies Gabriel Rubio and Kevin Jobity Jr. will be asked to step up in Joseph-Day’s absence. Both were healthy scratches to start the season, but the former has entered the Steelers’ game day roster picture in recent weeks. The latter will surely follow after today’s IR placement. Rubio in particular offers a 6-foot-5, 321-pound frame that could allow him to replace his veteran teammate as Pittsburgh’s No. 2 nose tackle.
