Steelers Predicted to Seek Key Upgrade After Packers Loss

The Pittsburgh Steelers suffered their second consecutive defeat on Sunday Night Football, dropping a 35-25 decision to the Green Bay Packers.

Despite the setback, they maintain the lead in the AFC North, though their cushion at the top feels far less secure than before.

Pittsburgh’s defensive struggles were glaring, with the unit surrendering 21 points in the final quarter alone to Green Bay. Yet the offense faces its own challenges, particularly at wide receiver beyond standout D.K. Metcalf, despite rookie Roman Wilson’s impressive showing in the game.

In the wake of the loss, Bleacher Report analyst Kristopher Knox issued a bold forecast, suggesting head coach Mike Tomlin’s squad could pursue a deal for New Orleans Saints speedster Rashid Shaheed.

“Given Shaheed’s presumed price point, only teams that legitimately believe they can make a postseason run are likely to make an offer—and that list probably doesn’t include the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, even if they could use added receiver depth. The Saints aren’t about to do a division rival any favors,” Knox wrote.

“The Pittsburgh Steelers, though, could use a field-stretching wideout. They’ve been ‘making calls’ about receivers, according to [Dianna] Russini.”

In New Orleans’ Week 8 defeat to the Buccaneers, Shaheed recorded nine receptions for 75 yards. Across the campaign, the 27-year-old has amassed 39 grabs for 431 yards and two touchdowns—numbers achieved amid inconsistent quarterback play from the Saints.

Entering the last season of his current deal, Shaheed profiles as an ideal trade target for a playoff hopeful such as Pittsburgh.

Originally signing as an undrafted free agent in 2022, the former Weber State star earned Pro Bowl honors and First-Team All-Pro recognition in just his sophomore year. That 2023 campaign saw him secure 46 catches for 719 yards and five touchdowns, plus a punt-return touchdown for good measure.

While not a primary target, Shaheed excels as a complementary weapon with elite deep-threat ability, boasting a career 14.9 yards-per-reception average. His multifaceted skill set adds even more appeal.

With the NFL trade deadline looming on November 4, the Steelers must explore several upgrades. Bolstering a leaky defense remains paramount, but acquiring a reliable additional target can’t be overlooked. Shaheed aligns perfectly with that objective.
