Steelers QB Kenny Pickett on starting Week 1: 'We’ll let the chips fall where they may'

The days of Pittsburgh Steelers rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett allegedly not being "ready to play exhibitions yet" probably feel as if they're from months, not weeks, ago at this point of the summer.

Since such claims surfaced, Pickett has completed 19-of-22 passes for 171 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions during warmup games versus the Seattle Seahawks and Jacksonville Jaguars. Presumed starter Mitchell Trubisky unintentionally let it be known he's not yet cemented atop the depth chart heading into Sunday's preseason finale versus the Detroit Lions that will be held at Pittsburgh's Acrisure Stadium when he openly campaigned to win the QB1 gig via public comments made earlier this week.

Pickett took somewhat of a different approach while speaking with reporters about the subject.

"I’m big on being the same guy every day," Pickett explained about his overall process, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "I’m big on being a pro-first guy in, last guy out type of stuff. I just want to be a professional and win. That’s all I want to show. We’ll let the chips fall where they may after the game, but I’m happy with what I’ve done so far."

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is not expected to name a starting signal-caller until after Sunday's action, which says plenty about Trubisky's supposed possession of the job as of the final Thursday of August. Whoever is under center for Pittsburgh will face a tough Week 1 test, as the Steelers will open the regular season at the reigning AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 11.
