The Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterbacks pecking order has changed. The Steelers will be playing at the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday August 20th. This change will show a new perspective at the position with Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph playing with different units.

Steelers Quarterbacks Ready To Shine Week 2

As a long time Steelers fan I have watched many preseason games. The Steelers are notorious for never taking preseason games serious. With that being said they’ve also been the beneficiary of having a first ballot hall of fame in Ben Roethlisberger with little to no depth behind him. For years the Steelers would roll out Big Ben for the first few series and he would make plays. The offense would move the ball and be effective. Once Ben would sit it was painful to watch. From Landry Jones and Dennis Dixon to Charlie Batch the ball stopped moving once the HOF quarterback left the game.

This is the first time in my memory that all Steelers Quarterbacks who played led the team to a scoring drive.

Mitch Trubisky

It started out hot with Mitch Trubisky making the throws a veteran should be able to. He was able to make plays with his legs to extend the play when the pocket collapsed. The first drive ended with his roll out throw to a wide open Gunner Olszewski. His second drive fizzled out and he was not able to get another touchdown and ultimately would be done for the day. Trubisky will roll out as the number one guy in the week 2 matchup.

Mason Rudolph

In comes Mason Rudolph, first play of the game fumble. He was able to recover the ball and prevent a turnover. The very next play he throws a beautiful floater to the back corner of the end zone to George Pickens for the toe-tap touchdown. From there Mason would end his day completing 9-15 passes.

At times it appeared that Mason was forcing throws into coverage. The writing on the wall is Mason is a one read quarterback. It looked like he tried to take more chances in tight windows, luckily for him the Seattle secondary could not catch the ball. With this being said, and the excitement around Kenny Pickett, Mason will be third on the pecking order this week. Tomlin has said all three guys will get a chance with all units. It feels as though with the big performance from Pickett that Mason has lost his number 2 job. He will roll out as quarterback three.

Kenny Pickett

Pickett comes in and immediately catches fire. He completes his first 10 passes and leads the Steelers to a scoring drive on a pass to Jaylen Warren. At times Pickett made costly mistakes like taking 2 big sacks. Other than the 2 sacks Pickett had a very strong game. He was patient and took what the defense was giving him. Kenny was able to create time with his legs and added a few rushes for 16 yards. He would ultimately end the game with a great pass to the outside to Tyler Vaughns who would reach the endzone with 6 seconds left. As a result, Pickett would end 13-15 for 95 yards and 2 touchdowns. It seems that Kenny is on the rise and has surpassed Mason. Kenny will be the second quarterback rolled out in week 2.

If the Steelers really had as much faith as they say in Mason do you really think they would bring in 3 new quarterbacks in one offseason? It would be understandable to bring in maybe a guy like Mitch or Kenny to give Mason competition and have depth at the position. That’s not what happened. The Steelers brought in 3 quarterbacks. Mitch is the named starter, it’s his job to lose. The team selected Kenny Pickett in the first round. The Steelers covet their draft picks probably more so than any other team in the league, so for them to select him that high says all you need.
