After receiving a lot of criticism last season, Steelers RB Najee Harris can make history in a couple of ways in 2023.
Harris can become the first running back in nearly a decade to rush for 1,000+ yards in his first three seasons and the first Steeler to achieve the mark. The last player to do so was Alfred Morris from 2012-14.
According to Pro Football Reference, there have been 75 running backs to have back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons but only 17 have done it three straight years.
If Harris does complete the feat, he'll join an elite list that includes Barry Sanders, Eric Dickerson, LaDainian Tomlinson, Adrian Peterson and other big-time names.
In a 17-game schedule, it only takes about 59 yards per game to rush for 1,000 yards. However, it's easier said than done, especially when dealing with injuries as Harris has had to do.
Although, it's reasonable to believe that Harris can do it if he can stay healthy with Pittsburgh's improved offensive line.
The 25-year-old can also set the Steelers' franchise record for the most rushing yards in a player's first three seasons. Harris only needs 649 yards to overtake Wille Parker, who currently holds the record at 2,882 yards.
Steelers' franchise record for most rushing yards in first 3 seasons:
— Daniel Valente (@StatsGuyDaniel) May 17, 2023
Willie Parker: 2882
Le'Veon Bell: 2777
Franco Harris: 2759
Rashard Mendenhall: 2439
Barry Foster: 2381
Najee Harris: 2234
Najee has played only 2 seasons & is just 649 yards away from setting the record.
While some may not believe Harris has lived up to his first-round expectations, he may continue to quietly prove his doubters wrong in 2023.
