Steelers Receive Critical Aaron Rodgers Confirmation Amid Cardinals Interest

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been entangled in yet another Aaron Rodgers waiting game. This was also the case during the 2025 offseason, but Rodgers ultimately arrived in Pittsburgh and delivered what was widely viewed as a positive first season with the franchise. When Mike Tomlin surprisingly stepped away from coaching, many assumed Rodgers’ brief tenure in the Steel City would end alongside him.

However, that narrative quickly shifted when Pittsburgh hired Rodgers’ former head coach, Mike McCarthy, fueling immediate speculation about a reunion. The connection between the two naturally reignited belief that Rodgers could return for another season, especially after showing he can still operate at an above-average level despite being 42 years old. Around the league, there appears to be a growing expectation that Rodgers plans to play in 2026 and simply has not made his announcement public yet.

Still, another wrinkle emerged Tuesday when Kendrick Bourne sparked debate on social media by suggesting the Arizona Cardinals were also waiting on Rodgers’ decision. That comment only added fuel to the growing rumors linking Arizona to the veteran quarterback. While the Cardinals have been floated as a potential landing spot, Pittsburgh continues to feel like the more logical fit given the McCarthy hire and the unfinished business Rodgers may still have with the Steelers. The cousin of Steelers Team President Art Rooney II, Pat Rooney Jr., appeared on the PBKC LIVE! show on Wednesday, where he confirmed the Cardinals did inquire with the Steelers about Rodgers.

"They did ask about [Rodgers] there," Rooney said during his time speaking on the podcast. "Yes, they did."

Pat is not necessarily a Steelers insider, nor does he officially speak for the organization. However, anyone with family members connected to certain industries knows information can naturally get passed along in conversations. In this case, Pat at least appeared confident in confirming that the Cardinals had interest in Rodgers at one point. It's safe to assume that Cardinals General Manager Monti Ossenfort, or another figure high up in the Cardinals' front office, called the Steelers at some point about Rodgers.

The Steelers’ decision to place a rare tender on Rodgers has also become a major talking point throughout the offseason. There have been conflicting reports about whether Rodgers is satisfied with how Pittsburgh has handled his delayed decision. Meanwhile, the Steelers still need clarity at quarterback for the 2026 season, and many believe Rodgers waiting this long is only prolonging that uncertainty.

Others around the league believe Rodgers could simply be keeping his options open to see if another team emerges with legitimate interest. Pat’s comments seem to validate that outside teams have at least checked in on Rodgers, even if it does not confirm anything beyond initial interest. It is also notable that Arizona reportedly contacted Pittsburgh about Rodgers, suggesting the Cardinals were doing their due diligence rather than signaling an aggressive pursuit of the former four-time NFL MVP.

Steelers' QB Situation Continues To Generate Lots Of Headlines

The Steelers’ quarterback situation continues to dominate headlines as the organization waits on Rodgers to make a final decision about his future. While much of the attention remains centered on Rodgers, Pittsburgh has quietly continued building depth at the position through recent drafts.

In the 2026 NFL Draft, the Steelers used a third-round pick on quarterback Drew Allar, giving the franchise a young developmental option with long-term upside. The move came just one year after Pittsburgh selected Will Howard in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, further signaling the team’s desire to invest in the position beyond Rodgers. The Steelers also still have veteran Mason Rudolph in the quarterback room, providing experience and familiarity with the organization. Whether Rodgers returns or not, Pittsburgh appears determined to have multiple options in place.
