Steelers Receive New Update On Adding Wide Receiver Help

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a bunch of big moves in the 2025 offseason. One of the biggest changes came in the wide receiver room, which saw a complete makeover. After trading for star receiver DK Metcalf, fans were excited about the potential pairing of Metcalf and George Pickens. That excitement was short-lived, as the Steelers quickly traded away Pickens, creating new concerns about the overall depth behind Metcalf.

With Pickens gone, the spotlight turns to Roman Wilson and Calvin Austin III. Both players are expected to take on much larger roles in 2025, and there is hope that each could have a breakout season. Wilson has shown strong chemistry with the quarterbacks during offseason practices, while Austin brings explosive speed and playmaking ability. Still, the wide receiver group lacks proven consistency beyond Metcalf, and that has left some uncertainty heading into the season.

Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo spoke about the situation during an appearance on 93.7 The Fan on Friday morning. He said he expects the team to add another wide receiver before the start of the regular season, but cautioned that it likely won’t be a big-name player. Instead, the Steelers are expected to bring in a reliable depth piece to round out the position group and provide insurance in case of injuries or underperformance.

"I think they'll bring in somebody," Fittipaldo said Friday morning. "But I don't know that that guy has to project as the number two. I could very much see a situation where they add a depth piece. Because I do think they have to protect themselves against injuries."

Steelers fans continue to hope that General Manager Omar Khan will make another move to find a reliable complement to Metcalf. However, according to Fittipaldo, it seems more likely that the team will add depth, rather than pursue a high-profile name. While the concerns about the wide receiver room are valid, the Steelers remain confident in the young talent they already have in-house.

The addition of 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the 2025 season is a game-changer. It raises expectations across the board, especially with a veteran defense stacked with talent, a special teams unit that ranks among the league’s best, and a young offense now guided by a four-time league MVP. Rodgers brings elite experience, a brilliant football mind, and the leadership needed to elevate the entire unit.

Perhaps the most important shift is that Head Coach Mike Tomlin is expected to fully trust Rodgers to make adjustments at the line of scrimmage and take control in critical moments. In the years following Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement, Tomlin’s approach leaned conservative, focused on protecting the football and winning the turnover battle.

With Rodgers under center, the Steelers can afford to be more aggressive, but having the right personnel is crucial. That’s why many fans are urging Khan to bring in another proven wide receiver before the 2025 season kicks off.

Steelers' 2025 Wide Receiver Room May Surprise Pundits

The Steelers are, of course, expecting Metcalf to have a big year in 2025 with Rodgers leading the offense. Wilson remains an intriguing prospect after a quiet rookie season, where injuries and limited opportunities kept him from making a true impact. Now entering his second year, Wilson is healthy and poised to make a splash as part of the revamped receiving corps.

Austin made a noticeable impact in 2024 and will look to take another step forward this season. To bolster the group further, the Steelers brought in veteran wide receiver Robert Woods, a dependable presence who brings experience and consistency opposite Metcalf. While Ben Skowronek isn’t expected to post big numbers, his physical style and willingness to do the dirty work should once again win over fans, just as it did in 2024.

Adding more depth to the wide receiver room could go a long way in giving the Steelers added flexibility and protection against injury. While the team is confident in its current group, a well-timed move to bring in another reliable target could be the final piece that solidifies the offense heading into a high-expectation 2025 season.
