The Pittsburgh Steelers underwent a remodel of their wide receiver room for new starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Electrifying deep threat DK Metcalf becomes the new No. 1 option after being acquired in a trade. The top target from the last few years, George Pickens, was dealt to the Dallas Cowboys.
Filling out the rest of the room is veteran addition Robert Woods, second-year player Roman Wilson and fellow youngster Calvin Austin III. Pat Freiermuth also returns as a reliable tight end in the pass game.
There may be concerns about the depth below Metcalf in this group. The Steelers will likely demand a major increase in production from each receiver to make Rodgers' adjustment easy and give the team the best chance to compete.
Wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni announced last week that Austin is currently the front runner to earn the WR2 spot, which raises expectations for the former fourth-round pick from a few years ago.
There could a lot left to be desired with Austin in this role, but Steelers reporter Mark Kaboly has raised an intriguing comparison that should get fans excited about his potential.
"Austin is a legitimate receiver," Kaboly said. "Now, whether he is a No. 2 or No. 3 is still unknown.
"Austin is small (listed as 5-9 160), but you know who else has put together a pretty good career despite being small in stature? Tyler Lockett is listed as 5-10, 180, but is a tick slower than Austin (4.32 to 4.4). Austin is a tough matchup, and what was noticeable is that he is a rough matchup when the No. 1 receiver [Metcalf] is 6-4, 230."
Lockett's play style and career is an admirable benchmark for Austin to find inspiration from. The former Seattle Seahawk veteran is a three-time All-Pro selection and has carved out a perfect niche in the NFL with his play style, one that Austin could replicate and build a solid career out of himself.
He may never blow you away physically, but Lockett is an extremely methodical and consistent route runner who knows how to slither through openings in the defense. He was also a perfect complement - athletically and schematically - to Metcalf during their days together in Seattle.
This type of smart receiver becomes a quarterbacks best friend very easily. If Austin can mold into this archetype, he could become a trustworthy target for Rodgers - something the veteran quarterback has always fed off of throughout his career.
Last year, his second in the NFL, Austin got his first real taste of quality production. He saw a two-times increase in receptions, totaling 548 yards and four touchdowns.
Austin could command even more touches in this greater role in the offense, so following a blueprint like Lockett could set him up for more success. Especially with a future Hall of Famer throwing him the rock.
