The Pittsburgh Steelers received a bit of positive injury news ahead of their Week 12 contest against the Chicago Bears. The question looming over the entire organization was the injury status of starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The 41-year-old suffered a broken wrist on his non-throwing arm, forcing him to miss a day of practice and limiting him otherwise.
But with the Bears in his sights, the Steelers quarterback took another step towards playing in their upcoming game. After missing a day of practice and being limited another, Rodgers finished the week with partial participation for the team's final session before traveling to Chicago. Still working through his fractured wrist and the pain associated, the starter looked ready to take on his old foe. The team's final injury report before the contest designated Rodgers as questionable ahead of the Week 12 meeting, head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed.
The Steelers did what we all thought they would regarding Rodgers. To no one's surprise, Rodgers has done everything in his power to rest and recover ahead of this Bears matchup, and he's done just enough to give the team confidence heading into Week 12.
For Rodgers, the main thing is about protecting that injured wrist and working through those challenges. If he does play, he'll wear some type of bracing to protect that wrist, but how will it hold up over the course of the game? Not only that, but will his ability to move and command the offense be impacted negatively by whatever precautions he takes?
The good news is that Rodgers' ability to throw the football won't be affected. The gunslinger looked excellent in practice working with his receivers ahead of the Week 12 game, and that part of the offense shouldn't take a step back.
The Steelers are keeping things close to the vest, and for good reason. This Week 12 matchup is a must-win contest for them as they hold on to a slim lead in the AFC North, and their competition is a team with their own must-win motivations as they hold on to a similarly slim lead in the NFC North. The Bears are desperate to prove they are Super Bowl contenders, and the Steelers are desperate to prove they can reach that status.
Which is why Tomlin provided little to go off of heading into the weekend. The Bears can't be sure if they'll face Rodgers or Mason Rudolph. That's two entirely different preparation processes, and potentially, a competitive advantage for the Steelers.
