Steelers’ Russell Wilson Has His Favorite Target Exposed: 'Could Have A Breakout Year'
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers made headlines in the 2024 offseason by signing former Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson to a one-year deal at the veteran minimum. After two challenging seasons with the Broncos, Wilson is eager to change the narrative and return to his winning ways in Pittsburgh.

As the Steelers' Organized Team Activities (OTAs) commenced, the spotlight was on the new quarterback. Wilson impressed pundits with his arm strength, wowing the Steelers coaches and generating unprecedented excitement in the Steel City.

The offseason has been filled with high hopes for improvement in the Steelers' wide receiver room. However, the front office has not appeared desperate, opting to bring in depth pieces like Van Jefferson and Quez Watkins—names that haven't exactly thrilled Steelers fans.

One thought that many Steelers fans have yet to consider: could the answer at wide receiver already be on the roster? Steelers insider Mark Kaboly, present at OTAs, was impressed with Wilson's performance. He also revealed that Wilson's favorite target was tight end Pat Freiermuth.

“It’s hard to not notice the connection that Wilson and Pat Freiermuth had. The two had a throwing session in San Diego earlier in the spring, which might have helped. But I couldn’t tell you how many times Wilson and Freiermuth connected over three days.”

Early in his tenure as a Steeler, Wilson took some of the team to San Diego for workouts. Freiermuth was among the players who joined him, and the two have already developed a strong rapport. This budding connection is an exciting prospect for Steelers fans.

“The tight end caught a touchdown on a Seven Shots drill, which he confirmed afterward, but more than that, Wilson seems to have the most trust in him right off the bat. Freiermuth is healthy, entering his contract year and finally has an accurate quarterback and an offensive coordinator who will highlight the tight end. He could have a breakout year.”

Freiermuth is entering a contract year and will become a free agent after the 2024 season. He now has a capable quarterback and an offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith, who loves to feature the tight end position. The 2024 season is expected to be a breakout year for Freiermuth. While speaking to Kaboly, Freiermuth shared his major takeaway about his new quarterback.

“One thing about Russ is that he demands communication,” Freiermuth said. “We have to adjust that and understand our role.”

Wilson faced significant criticism for the Broncos' struggles during his two seasons with the team. Despite his routine and work ethic earning him nine Pro Bowl selections and a Super Bowl win, the blame often falls on the quarterback when a team loses.

Various reports about Wilson have surfaced, with some being contested by his former teammates. While many believe his teammates didn't like him, the situation in Pittsburgh appears to be quite the opposite.

Steelers' Pat Freiermuth Will Have A Ton Of Pressure On Him In 2024

Freiermuth has clearly enjoyed his time with Wilson and is excited about the new offensive system that benefits him, along with having a solid quarterback to get him the ball. If Freiermuth has the big 2024 season many are expecting, it’s likely the Steelers will work out a favorable deal to keep him in Pittsburgh.

However, if he struggles in the new system, it could mark the end of his time in the Steel City. The 2024 season is filled with pressure for the organization and several key players. It’s boom or bust, and if the Steelers don’t win at least one playoff game, the season will be seen as a massive failure. For Freiermuth, having a productive 2024 season could greatly improve his paycheck. It's an ideal spot for the young tight end but also one that comes with great pressure.
