The Pittsburgh Steelers have a few weaknesses on the current roster that could be addressed with the franchise's first-round pick next month, but none should be prioritized more than wide receiver. The Steelers have struggled in this area for several seasons, and it is time that the organization focuses on finding a star for the offense. It is the expectation that the Steelers will be taking a wide receiver with the 21st overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, but it will be interesting to see who is still on the board by the time that selection rolls around. Wide receiver could be a popular position in the first round, which wouldn't be good for Pittsburgh.
Mike McCarthy is an offensive-minded head coach, and he is going to want to add some weapons to that side of the ball. This can happen on the trade market and through free agency, but it should also happen at the top of the draft. Wide receivers that have been considered to fall in the range of where Pittsburgh is picking are KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston, while players like Carnell Tate, Makai Lemon, and Jordyn Tyson are all expected to be off of the board. Beat writer Mark Kaboly joined 93.7 The Fan on Monday, where he shared that Tyson could drop in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
"I think Tyson is a guy that may have slid down on the boards just because he didn’t participate, right?" Kaboly asked. "He could potentially be there."
Tyson spoke to the media during the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, but he did not participate in any on field drills. The only thing he did was the bench press, where he put up 26 reps, which almost broke the record for wide receivers. Tyson's lack of participation could make teams skeptical about selecting him, which could make him drop a little bit in the first round. Him falling all the way to 21 is a longshot, but if he slides a little bit, the Steelers will have the chance to move up and grab him.
Tyson is not the only top wide receiver in this year's draft class who probably did not help his draft stock at the Scouting Combine. Both Lemon and Tate came away from the event with some naysayers. Tate ran slower than expected, which probably won't play a big factor in his draft positioning, but a few teams could rule him out. Lemon reportedly was horrific during his time with certain organizations, and his time on the podium with the media was off-putting and bizarre.
Tyson would be a welcomed addition in Pittsburgh, but so would any of those three wideouts. If any of them fall into the range of the Steelers, General Manager Omar Khan would have to pounce and give up some draft capital to move up and land one of them.
Tyson has been at Arizona State for the last three seasons, and he has been coached by Hines Ward for the last two. The former Steelers wide receiver and Super Bowl XL MVP have been passing on tons of lessons to Tyson, which would make him a perfect fit in Pittsburgh.
The two seem to be close and like each other, so it would be interesting to see Tyson wearing the black and gold after his mentor did it years ago. Tyson has the potential to be a great wide receiver in the NFL, and he could really help Pittsburgh's offense take a step in the right direction.
