Steelers Sign S Israel Mukuamu

Mukuamu made just one appearance as a member of the Panthers last season. For four years prior to that, however, he played for the Cowboys. That spell included plenty of time working under head coach Mike McCarthy, who is now at the helm of the Steelers.

Safety has been a position of considerable change for Pittsburgh this offseason. Each of Chuck Clark, Kyle Dugger and Miles Killebrew signed elsewhere as free agents. Meanwhile, Jaquan Brisker was added on the open market this spring. Much more recently, veteran Rayshawn Jenkins took a deal with the Steelers. Mukuamu will join those new faces and attempt to carve out a depth role during the remainder of the summer.

The 26-year-old made 50 appearances and three starts during his Dallas tenure. Mukuamu logged triple-digit defensive snaps in 2022 and ’24, but at all times his primary contributions came on special teams. It would come as no surprise if that were to be the case in Pittsburgh provided Mukuamu survives roster cuts at the end of training camp.

In a corresponding move, cornerback Ahmari Harvey has been waived. No guarantees were present on his deal, so that move will create $885K in savings. For a Steelers team low on cap space, Mukuamu will represent an inexpensive addition to the secondary and Pittsburgh’s special teams units.
