Steelers Throwback Thursday: Antonio Brown’s first career play

Steel City Underground takes fans back in time to feature events, special moments, and historical times and players in the world of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Steelers Nation. Join us as we revisit these moments in our “Steelers Throwback Thursday” series.

Every time we put out an article in this series, we take a mini trip down memory lane. Although the player we featured this week became a polarizing figure on the Steelers roster – and later in his NFL career – his very first career play for Pittsburgh is one worth remembering; it is what started Steelers Nation’s love affair with the receiver, at least until things got a little weird.

Antonio Brown, selected by the Steelers in the 6th round of the 2010 NFL Draft (No. 195 overall) is arguably the greatest receiver of his era. A blue-chip All-American at Central Michigan, the Steelers recognized his potential as a receiver and a returner.

The rookie “AB” famously said he chose the number ’84’ jersey because, “Eight times four is 32. Thirty-two teams looked past me, even the Steelers. So every time I go out there it’s a little added motivation.” The Steelers did select Emmanuel Sanders ahead of Brown, but no one has ever stated that the team outright overlooked him. He was rated by draft scouts as a 5th or 6th round pick ahead of the actual draft.

On September 19 (2010), Brown made his NFL debut. The Steelers hosted the Tennessee Titans. On the opening kickoff, running back Mewelde Moore handled the kickoff, but flipped the ball to Brown in a reverse-type move. Brown rumbled down the field for an 89-yard touchdown.

That play made Brown the first player – since Steve Smith (with the Carolina Panthers, 2001) – to return a kickoff for a touchdown in his first career game in the NFL.

Brown went on to lead the league twice in receiving yards, twice in receptions, and once in receiving touchdowns as a member of the Steelers. He also earned seven Pro Bowl selections, including six consecutive, and four consecutive first-team All-Pro selections.
