Steelers' Week 1 contest may not have a familiar face at quarterback anymore following a scary practice injury to Justin Fields

The schedule makers created Week 1 for the Pittsburgh Steelers with revenge on the mind.

Revenge for Aaron Rodgers against the New York Jets, and for Justin Fields to show the Steelers they made the wrong choice.

But following a scary injury on Thursday, all of that is up in the air...

Update : Jets HC Aaron Glenn said Justin Fields injured his toe and is still be examined for severity.

Justin Fields carted off the field at Jets practice

Multiple reports say that Fields pulled up while running, attempted to limp off the field, and then was assisted to the cart while riding in the front seat. Far too early to speculate on what happened; it's still not a good sign.

The Jets are hoping that Fields helps them turn a page within the franchise. That under new leadership at the general manager, head coach and quarterback position, perhaps they can instill a new culture.

Losing your starting quarterback never helps that.

Just days after signing Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner to massive extensions on their rookie deals, there is suddenly an ominous feeling around the team again. Fields may not be a star, and he still has to prove he can be a starting quarterback in this league, but his 2024 tape and six games with the Pittsburgh Steelers were the best of his career.

He was the most poised, accurate, and confident we had seen him. He willed the Pittsburgh Steelers to multiple wins, played the game of his career against the Los Angeles Chargers , and went 4-2 just to have the plug pulled by Mike Tomlin for Russell Wilson.

There were rumors amid the four-game skid that people within the building wanted to go back to Fields, but instead, the Steelers fell to the Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs and had five straight losses to close the season.

This injury obviously puts Week 1 up in the air, which was going to and still might give both Aaron Rodgers and Justin Fields a chance to get back at their former teams.
