The Pittsburgh Steelers made the increasingly controversial – but entirely unsurprising – decision to retain head coach Mike Tomlin for 2025. With his track record, lack of a star quarterback, and ability to get the most out of any given roster, Pittsburgh is content with its leadership.
The Chicago Bears, decidedly, were not.
Chicago fired head coach Matt Eberflus after a Thanksgiving collapse that epitomized the team’s procedural struggles and led to a preventable loss against the rival Detroit Lions. In an attempt to redirect the franchise and salvage No. 1 pick Caleb Williams, Eberflus was fired and the search for a superstar head coach commenced.
On Monday, the Bears announced their major coaching move, hiring Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, per Tom Pelissero.
Johnson was the hottest name on the coaching carousel, helping Detroit dominate with a strong run game and non-elite quarterback. With the thought process that someone of Williams’ talent has plenty of potential to tap into, Johnson is expected to call plays and cultivate those physical tools and creativity into a franchise quarterback.
If those results come quickly, it could spell trouble for Pittsburgh.
The Steelers don’t know when they are playing each individual opponent just yet; that will likely come in May. But they do know who and where those games will be played, and Pittsburgh will have a trip to Chicago somewhere on its schedule.
The Steelers will also play the New England Patriots and New York Jets – both on the road – as they welcome in new coaches. New England hired head coach Mike Vrabel, who was 0-3 against Pittsburgh during his stint with the Tennessee Titans. New York is yet to hire a head coach.
It’s too early to tell how formidable the Bears will be by the time they welcome the Steelers to the Windy City, but the game could be a window into a timeline Pittsburgh is actively pushing off, whether it be a new-look offense with a rising franchise quarterback or a new head coach struggling to live up to the expectations of an iconic franchise.
If things go well for Chicago, that’s one more difficult game for the Steelers to overcome in 2025.
