Steelers would sign Baker Mayfield 'the very next day' if he's cut?

It looks like there's at least one NFL team left with some interest in possibly picking up former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield.

To nobody's surprise, Mayfield wasn't among those members of the Cleveland Browns to report to the beginning of the team's voluntary offseason workouts on Tuesday. Instead, recently acquired controversial quarterback Deshaun Watson was at Cleveland's team facility, despite still facing 22 civil lawsuits regarding allegations of sexual misconduct.

Watson has had two Texas grand juries decline to indict him on criminal charges, but he could still be made ineligible to play for a portion of the 2022 campaign via an NFL suspension.

Mayfield, meanwhile, is still recovering from the January surgery he needed to repair his injured non-throwing shoulder and is waiting to see if he'll be traded, released or play with the only NFL franchise he's known, in 2022. He is owed a fully guaranteed salary of $18.858 million for the final season of his rookie contract has repeatedly been linked with the Seattle Seahawks and, more recently, the Carolina Panthers.

Following the January retirement of Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers could look for their next franchise signal-caller via the upcoming NFL Draft, or in a trade or free-agency signing. Mayfield turned 27 years old last week.
