The NFL has made a final decision on Pittsburgh Steelers WR DK Metcalf for punching a fan during Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions. Metcalf has been suspended two games without pay, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Metcalf, who reported the same fan to security last season, plans to appeal. For now, he’s set to miss this Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns and the regular season finale against the Baltimore Ravens.
The incident happened during the second quarter when the game was tied at three. During the CBS broadcast, rules analyst Gene Steratore explained what could happen to DK Metcalf since he was not penalized for the punch.
“On this situation, because the officials did not see this and wouldn’t expect them to where DK Metcalf was, it’s not something they can weigh in too from an officiating standpoint,” Steratore said. “I have been notified, though, that that will be delivered to compliance with the NFL, and they’ll address it at that point.”
Metcalf has been a strong addition to the Steelers this year. Entering the Week 16 game, the 28-year-old has caught 55 passes for 808 yards and six touchdowns. Metcalf joined the Steelers this year after spending his first six seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.
It seems like Metcalf enjoys playing in Pittsburgh. Earlier this month, the former Ole Miss star explained what it’s like to play for Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.
“I think he’s a great leader,” Metcalf said while speaking to Liam McKeone of Sports Illustrated. “Just the way that he carries himself in and out of the building. How he motivates me and gets me to follow his lead. I think he’s done a heck of a job sitting in there, listening to his team meetings. Anything that he has to say or his point of view about things. He’s coached some great players in his past, and I’m just trying to add to that list with the way that I play.”
Metcalf has played a big role in the Steelers’ push to win the AFC North. Pittsburgh is looking to reach the postseason for the third consecutive year and its first division championship since 2020. The last time Metcalf competed in the postseason was in 2022.
