New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs is facing a felony strangulation charge stemming from an incident that took place earlier this month.
Diggs has been charged with felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery charges over an incident on Dec. 2, according to court documents obtained by Boston 25 News. No further details were available regarding the nature of the case or the alleged victim.
Diggs’ arraignment has been scheduled for Jan. 23, two days before the AFC Championship. His attorney, Michael DiStefano, appeared in court Tuesday to request that the date be moved to March. DiStefano also sought to have the police report impounded, and told a judge that Diggs is attempting to negotiate a financial settlement with the alleged victim.
The Patriots said in a statement that they are aware of the allegations, and that Diggs “categorically denies” them.
“Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations,” the statement said. “We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary.”
