Patriots’ wide receiver Stefon Diggs is facing serious criminal charges stemming from an incident on December 2. Boston 25 News reported Tuesday morning that Diggs is charged with felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery. Diggs’ arraignment was scheduled to begin yesterday in court.

Reports say that the incident occurred due to a payment dispute involving a private chef who worked for Diggs.

The Patriots released a statement today following the news about their star receiver.

“The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs. Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations. We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary. Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”

The NFL released a statement of its own regarding the matter:

“We are aware of the matter and have been in contact with the club. We have no further comment at this time”.

There has been no indication regarding Diggs’s eligibility to finish the season with the team, as this is an ongoing investigation. Diggs has been Maye’s favorite target and is coming off two back-to-back 100-yard games. Losing him would be a huge loss for New England’s offense. Their receiver room has dealt with its share of injuries in recent weeks. Mack Hollins was designated to the injured reserve list last week, and Kayshon Boutte missed the last game with a concussion.

Losing Diggs puts a huge weight on the shoulders of rookies, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III, who have a combined season total of 12 catches for 249 yards. Boutte may be sidelined for Week 18, but we can assume he will clear concussion protocol by the time the playoffs begin in two weeks. Mayes receiving corps will now include Boutte, DeMario Douglas, Williams, and Chism. The loss of Mack Hollins now becomes a huge issue if Diggs is unable to play out the rest of the season.
