Steve Young: Lack of trust between Jimmy Garoppolo, Kyle Shanahan limiting 49ers late in games

San Francisco 49ers legend Steve Young thinks he knows why quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and head coach Kyle Shanahan have struggled producing points in the second halves of games. 

"There is, and when I say lack of trust between Jimmy and Kyle, what I'm saying is, and I repeat this all the time -- Mike (Shanahan) said this to me," Young explained during an appearance on San Francisco sports radio station KNBR, per Kirk Larrabee of 49ers WebZone. "I know that (Buffalo Bills head coach) Sean McDermott has said it to Josh Allen. I know that Patrick Mahomes has heard this because (Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid) told me this -- but turning to those guys and saying 'I am going to be aggressive for four quarters. You protect me.' And that's that trust level. I don't think we're there.

"People start to see your game plan. You've got to kind of be iterative. And then I think either Kyle has to go all in and say, 'I'm just going to do it. I'm going to let it rip the way I want to and take it where it comes,' or 'I'm going to continue to manage through the second halves.' And that would speak to why we're not coming back in the fourth quarter and all of that."

In Week 6, the 49ers were shut out by the Atlanta Falcons in the second half of what became a 28-14 defeat. This past Sunday, the Chiefs outscored San Francisco by a 30-10 margin in the second half. That loss dropped the Niners to 3-4 on the season ahead of this Sunday's matchup at the 3-3 Los Angeles Rams.

"It's just on the offense," Garoppolo said after the Atlanta contest, as shared by CBS News Bay Area. "Putting up zero points in the second half is just not us. We've just got to go back to the drawing board, get back to our style of football, and I think the rest will take care of itself."

Meanwhile, Young added it's up to Garoppolo and Shanahan to fix whatever is ailing the offense after halftime breaks. 

"It's both of them and they've got to figure out how to make those adjustments for each other so they can be more aggressive and create more opportunities and not kick field goals against the best teams," Young remarked.
