Steve Young worries 49ers QB Trey Lance will get injured 'trying to be Superman'

Starting quarterback Trey Lance drew criticism after the San Francisco 49ers blew a second-half lead to fall 19-10 to the Chicago Bears in their season opener.

Despite playing through harsh conditions at Soldier Field, the Niners blew a 10-0 second-half lead, dropping to 0-1 in a lackluster fashion.

Fair or not, most of the blame fell on the second-year quarterback's shoulders. Some have even called for San Francisco to bench Lance in favor of former starter Jimmy Garopollo.

Lance's stat-line was unspectacular at best, going 13-for-28 for 164 yards and an interception.

Hall of Fame quarterback and 49ers' great Steve Young believes Lance is still adjusting to the NFL game.

Appearing on the Tolbert and Copes show on KNBR this week, Young said Lance is used to being "bigger and stronger" than everyone else while he played in college at North Dakota State.

"He was faster, so he was like, 'Why would I worry about anything, just run around and run over people and throw the ball, just stiff arm the defensive tackle and throw the ball,'" Young said. "And you could see that. You could see that he doesn't understand that these guys are faster, that they are bigger, and they're going to get you."

According to Young, Lance's lack of awareness is a big red flag. And he worries that the second-year quarterback will get injured if he doesn't figure out how to play at the NFL level.

"Don't act like you're bigger than everybody, you're not anymore," Young said. "You used to be, not anymore. Now you've got to act accordingly. What I don't want to have him do is get stood up and get hurt because he's trying to be Superman. I know this feeling."

Lance may not have long to turn things around. On Thursday, NFL insider Jason La Canfora reported that people "who have worked with and for head coach, Kyle Shanahan" believe Garoppolo will start Week 3 if Lance's struggles continue this Sunday.
