Successful Dolphins Season Relies On Hope

The Miami Dolphins open their 2025 season in just over a week in Indianapolis. There is a lot of negative talk about the Dolphins this year, and many experts don’t expect a lot. I don’t think the Dolphins are as bad as people make them out to be. I actually think they have a chance to be good.

I don’t have any expectations for this team, but I feel they have some good younger talent that may go through some growing pains. The problem is that this team can be good, but it comes with a lot of hope.

There is hope that, with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa returning healthy, the Dolphins will be fine on offense with their leader under center. We all saw what happened last year when he missed time. The thing is, Tagovailoa has only played one full season in his football career.

I think the backup quarterback situation is better, but I have to remind myself it’s Zach Wilson and a rookie Quinn Ewers. Wilson didn’t play better each game, but he looks uncomfortable at times with this being a new offense.

Ewers is a rookie, so who knows what you would get if he is called upon. You hope that last year doesn’t happen again at quarterback and Tagovailoa can stay healthy, but history says that he won’t.

The Dolphins appear to have a solid starting offensive line, but beyond that, it gets dicey. You’d better hope that this offensive line stays healthy so we don’t have to see any of the backups, who were pathetic in the preseason. Austin Jackson got hurt shortly after camp started, and the offensive line fell apart in the second half of the season without him. Jackson is now back and on track to play, but you hope he doesn’t go down.

On the positive side, Patrick Paul looks like he is ready to step up and become the anchor on this offensive line, and he has the physical tools to become a good player. The Dolphins are also banking on James Daniels to come back after he tore his Achilles tendon last year. The problem is that those injuries are hard to come back from, and again, the Dolphins are hoping.

The Dolphins drafted a physical running back in Ollie Gordon. He is going to get a chance to play because the Dolphins lost Alexander Mattison to an injury for the season. De’Von Achane is working himself back from an injury, but it looks like he will be ready. Jaylen Wright is hurt, but he was having an uninspiring preseason to begin with.

The key is that I hope head coach Mike McDaniel utilizes Gordon in the right situations. He needs to use him in the short yardage situations so he can get those tough 3-4 yards. The problem is that McDaniel hasn’t used his bigger backs in the past. He had Jeff Wilson last year, and he didn’t activate him much. He let Chris Brooks go. McDaniel can’t use a smaller back in Achane in short yardage, or he will get physically worn down. He needs to use Gordon in those short-yardage situations. I just hope he does. I’m not worried about Gordon, just McDaniel and how he uses him.

The defense brings back its top pass rushers in Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb to go with promising second-year pass rusher Chop Robinson. This unit has a chance to be special, potentially if they can stay healthy. That’s the thing, I hope they can stay healthy because Chubb has torn his ACL twice, and Phillips is coming off another season-ending injury.

If this group holds up, it will help a young and inexperienced secondary, but if they are hurt, then the defense could fall apart.

This year’s rookie class looks to be the most talented draft class that they have had in the past 5 years, led by defensive tackle Kenneth Grant. The Dolphins’ two other defensive tackles, Jordan Phillips and Zeek Biggers, will build a new core on the defensive line. The Dolphins also drafted Jonah Savaiinaea as part of the new core on the offensive line with Paul. The thing is, they are rookies, and rookies develop differently. Some are ready right away, and others need time. If the Dolphins are going to be good, then they better hope this group of rookies is ready to play and make an impact right away.

This season is a reset year for the Dolphins, but they have a chance to be good, I believe.

However, it relies on a lot of hope, and hope can be a dangerous thing.
