After some significant investments throughout the offseason by general manager Adam Peters, the Washington Commanders' offensive line dynamic has taken a seismic shift. But a sudden injury scare at training camp threatens to throw a wrench into the team's plans.
The Commanders have had a relatively clean bill of health throughout camp so far. Pro Bowl wide receiver Terry McLaurin isn't practicing as he awaits a contract extension from the franchise, and right guard Sam Cosmi is still recovering from a torn ACL, but things could be much worse.
However, an issue suffered by former third-round pick Brandon Coleman during Saturday's practice left fans facing an agonizing wait before further information is available.
Ben Standig, formerly of The Athletic, noted that Coleman limped off the field and went straight into the facility. He didn't come back, with Andrew Wylie chosen to fill in at left guard as rookie Josh Conerly Jr. continues his evolution into the starting right tackle.
Coleman became Washington's starting left tackle last season after initially splitting blindside reps with Cornelius Lucas. He was solid if not spectacular, but that didn't stop the Commanders from making an upgrade in the form of five-time Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil.
This is a major positive that should help quarterback sensation Jayden Daniels. Tunsil's arrival also saw Coleman switch to the interior, which is where most believe his skills are best suited. It's been a smooth transition to his new role, so fans will be hoping for good news regarding his problem.
Time is still on the Commanders' side. They can be cautious with Coleman for now. But if the damage is more severe, Peters must pivot quickly to avoid any unnecessary complications.
Having someone like Wylie, who could realistically play every position apart from center, is a bonus. But with Nate Herbig retiring just a few days into training camp, depth on Washington's interior protection isn't exactly great.
Until the club confirms anything one way or another, it's a waiting game. Coleman is a big part of the team's plans this season and potentially beyond. If he's forced to miss time now, it's not a big deal. But if the injury means he cannot take the field when the regular season arrives, the Commanders have a massive problem on their hands.
Let's hope Coleman limping off and out of practice was just precautionary. After all, the last thing Washington needs is instability in front of its franchise player.
