With the Kansas City Chiefs having won the past two Super Bowls in the NFL, there is history on the line on Sunday in New Orleans. No team in the annals of the NFL has ever managed three straight Super Bowl wins, after all, and the Chiefs are on the precipice of rewriting the history books.
There is star power in the game, with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes having established himself as an all-time great just eight years into his career and with his running partner, Travis Kelce, set to go down as one of the game's all-time best tight ends.
On the other side, there is Saquon Barkley, who left the Giants in free agency and put up a history season, totaling 2,005 yards rushing, just the ninth NFL player to join the 2,000-yard club. It just happens to be Barkley's birthday on Sunday.
That makes this game particularly hard for the handicappers and bettors to pick.
Both teams come in red-hot. The Eagles have lost only one game since September, going 15-1 in their last 16 games. The Chiefs, too, have been able to pull out win after win, having won 24 of their last 25 games, throwing out the Week 18 showing in which they rested their best players.
That string goes back to last December, and includes a thrilling overtime win over the 49ers in the 2024 Super Bowl.
As ESPN's Chris Berman, a veteran game-picker, wrote, "This truly is a 'Super' Super Bowl."
And that is reflected in the difficulty that the sports books have had in setting a line. The game opened with a very tight point spread of 1.5, with the Chiefs favored. It has not budged much since.
At Vegas Insider, which tracks multiple sports books, five of the eight lines have moved to the Chiefs favored by just 1.0 point. Three of them (Draft Kings, FanDuel and BetMGM) still have the Chiefs giving up 1.5 points in the spread.
The over/under on the game has moved a bit more. Originally, the number was set at 50.5, but bettors have clearly favored the defenses in this one, as the total has been bet down under 50 points across the board.
In fact, only BetMGM has the total set at 49.0, per Vegas Insider. The other seven sports books listed are all putting the total at 48.5 points.
There's still time, of course, to get your bets in. The Super Bowl kicks off at 6:30 p.m. EST from New Orleans, and will be aired on Fox.
