Super Bowl King of Props: Goedert among mortals

As two recent Super Bowl champions prepare to compete for another title, the cores of the teams are notably different. Head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes lead the Chiefs to their third Super Bowl appearance in the last four years, having captured the crown in February 2020. On the other side, the Eagles are five years removed from their title, and both the coach (Nick Sirianni) and QB (Jalen Hurts) are newcomers.

The betting options for the Super Bowl likewise reflect familiar and foreign elements. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of props, especially since many are unique to this event. In the run-up to kickoff, all of the KOP’s favorite investment opportunities will be posted here at Yardbarker.

The Bet: Over 4½ receptions for Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert (FanDuel)

One of the elite players at the position, Goedert recorded his third season of 55+ catches despite missing five games with a shoulder injury. He has cleared this number in his last three contests and in each of his four career playoff starts, three of which featured Hurts at quarterback.

In the NFC Championship Game, Goedert got there by catching five short passes for 23 yards. But each of his six targets came in the first half as the Eagles built a 21-7 lead en route to a 31-7 win. If the 49ers had been healthy enough at quarterback to keep the game within reach, the tight end would’ve remained a focal point.

A similar blowout seems highly unlikely against the Chiefs, whose defense ranked 18th in passing yards allowed per game during the regular season. The Eagles could well find themselves trailing for the first time in this postseason, increasing the importance of an effective passing attack.

With Hurts having accuracy issues on deep balls since returning from his own shoulder injury, he’ll look to make higher-percentage throws – and Goedert should continue to be his safety valve.
