Over their last two games, the Chicago Bears have been severely shorthanded in their pass rush. Montez Sweat was suspended for a PED violation while Dayo Odeyingbo was on injured reserve with a quad ailment.

The Bears still managed to exit the stretch 2-0. But they had to turn to some unlikely sources in the pass rush. Cornerback Kyler Gordon made an explosive return from injury, putting up a new four sacks in just two games. Both safety Dillon Thieneman and Daniel Hardy put up 1.5 sacks as well.

Gordon and Thieneman have become household names in Chicago. But Hardy has predominantly been used on special teams. He never record a sack at the NFL level in his four seasons prior to 2026.

Because of that, Hardy’s recent performance had stood out for all the right reasons. Head coach Ben Johnson has certainly taken notice.

Johnson has helped completely change the culture in Chicago. He doesn’t accept mediocre. No matter your status, if a change needs to happen, the head coach isn’t afraid to make it. In turn, that mentality allows for players like Hardy to earn real opportunities.

Once the defensive end’s number was called, he was ready to make a name for himself. Now, Hardy may have earned himself some extra playing time, via Mason Williams of the Times of Northwest Indiana.

“I think he’s done as good of a job as anybody affecting the passer these last two weeks, and (he’s) a guy that certainly warrants a little bit more playing time on defense,” Johnson said of Hardy.

Sweat will be making his return in Week 8, which will cut into the pass rush rotation. But Johnson and defensive coordinator Dennis Allen won’t suddenly force Hardy to the bench with how he has been playing.

Chicago is scouring the market for any available pass rushers before the trade deadline. But they have one Johnson feels can be a rising star already in the building.
