After starting the season 0-3, the New York Jets matched up against the 0-3 Miami Dolphins in a Week 4 edition of Monday Night Football. This game was marked as a must-win for both teams if either team wanted to create the smallest chance of a turnaround for the 2025 campaign. In the end, it was the Dolphins who emerged victorious as the Jets joined the New Orleans Saints and the Tennessee Titans as the only winless teams this season. This is the first time the Jets have started 0-4 since 2020, when Adam Gase was the head coach. The Jets so far this season can be described by an infamous movie title – the good, the bad, and the ugly. Let’s see which buckets some of these Jets takeaways fall into.

Takeaways From the Jets Week 4 Loss to the Miami Dolphins

Takeaway #1 – The Defense is Beginning to Look Unsalvageable

Let’s start with the bad. Just a few years ago, the Jets’ identity was stifling defense. Now, the unit looks unrecognizable. Through four games, the Jets are now averaging 30 points allowed per game. That is tied for the fourth-worst mark in the league. The issues lie at every single position at this point. The Jets were unable to even hit, let alone sack, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa last night, according to PFF. Next, the makeshift linebacker room of Jamien Sherwood, Kiko Mauigoa, and Cam Jones were getting easily manipulated by play action. Finally, the secondary had a bad night in both coverage and tackling. This was highlighted by superstar cornerback Sauce Gardner allowing a touchdown to Dolphins tight end Darren Waller and starting safety Tony Adams missing an easy tackle on Dolphins running back DeVon Achane for another touchdown. The Jets are at the point now where firing Steve Wilks has to be a thought behind the scenes. The defense just doesn’t look ready to play on a weekly basis now.

Takeaway #2 – Ball Security Needs to be Improved

Sticking with the bad, the Jets simply need to hold onto the football. The Jets fumbled three times last night with the offenders being running back Braelon Allen, quarterback Justin Fields, and kick returner Isaiah Williams. All of these fumbles took place at crucial points of the game. Allen fumbled on the goal line during the Jets’ first drive, Fields fumbled on a fourth-down attempt, and Williams fumbled on the opening kickoff of the second half. Allen’s fumble specifically was especially brutal as the Jets had one of their best drives in the season before it happened. These are the types of plays that have haunted the Jets all season. As Jets star running back Breece Hall alluded to after the game, you cannot win if you constantly set yourself back.

Takeaway #3 – Jets Got it Right with Garrett Wilson and Mason Taylor

Moving away from the negatives, the “good” from last night is that the Jets have 2 pretty good pass catchers. Jets star wide receiver Garrett Wilson made a few great plays last night, finishing with a 6 catch, 82-yard, and 1 touchdown stat-line. He actually should have had another touchdown as well had it not been for a horrendous offensive pass interference call. Wilson is playing like a superstar right now. Rookie tight end Mason Taylor was great last night as well. He is very clearly the Jets second best pass-catcher as he finished with a 5 catch, 65-yard night. Usage like this should be the norm for Taylor, as he can function both as a safety blanket or a primary option on any given play. Hopefully, his game last night is the start of a good stretch as the Jets’ schedule lightens up.

Takeaway #4 – The Jets are not More Disciplined Under Aaron Glenn

Finally, the ugly. Penalties were a hot topic of discussion for the Jets coming into this season. The team was highly undisciplined under Robert Saleh, so fans were looking for a change. New Head Coach Aaron Glenn was adamant that he wanted to clean this issue up. However, that has been anything but the case through four games. Just last night, the Jets committed 13 penalties for 101 yards, taking their total on the season up to 32. Racking up a football field worth of penalties is certainly going to create an uphill battle. Of those 13 penalties, 6 of them were pre-snap offensive penalties. Those are the ones that need to be cleaned up the most. Ticky-tacky penalties like pass interference and holding are often times unavoidable. However, false starts, illegal shifts, and delay of games are. This is something the Jets must figure out fast.

Unfortunately, it might not be much better for the Jets next week, as they host the 1-2-1 Dallas Cowboys in Week 5.
