The Pittsburgh Steelers needed to make a statement against the Indianapolis Colts in Week Nine, and they did. After blowing two winnable games against the Cincinnati Bengals and Green Bay Packers, Mike Tomlin’s team smacked the squad at the top of the AFC. When everybody was out on them, the Steelers did what the Steelers do. Pittsburgh looked like a different team in Week Nine.
Pittsburgh’s long-tenured head coach, Mike Tomlin, has been facing justified heat from the fans. Two losses in a row had people screaming and crying. When the pressure was on Tomlin in Week Nine, he came up big. Everybody wrote them off against the almighty Colts. Tomlin’s defense did their job and lived up to their price tag for once, securing a big win in Pittsburgh.
Linebacker Payton Wilson balled out in Week Nine . He led the Steelers with 13 total tackles and nine solos. Wilson also defended two passes. One was an interception, and the other was a tip that set up Jack Sawyer for his first career interception. Wilson was playing with his hair on fire after a disappointing start to the season. When he plays well, it’s a gigantic bump for the defense.
The Colts came into the week on cloud nine. Daniel Jones and Jonathan Taylor are MVP candidates. Tyler Warren is one of the best tight ends in the NFL. Their offensive line is one of the best units in the league. The Steelers made them all look foolish. Jones got sacked five times and reverted to the New York version of himself. Taylor had his worst game of the season. Warren was held to 26 yards. The Colts got stunned. Hats off to the Pittsburgh defense.
The Steelers offense scored 27 points in Week 9, but they didn’t play well, and Aaron Rodgers admitted it in his postgame press conference. D.K. Metcalf finished the game with six yards and two dropped passes. They didn’t run the ball efficiently. They can play better, and they know it. Adding a weapon at the trade deadline would’ve helped. Marquez Valdes-Scantling will attempt to help.
After consecutive abysmal showings, fans questioned the Steelers’ defense. They responded in Week Nine. Before the contest, the Colts turned the ball over four times in eight games. Pittsburgh forced six turnovers against its historic offense. Kyle Dugger got the gam ball for playing 77 of 78 defensive snaps after joining the team less than a week ago. As Coach Tomlin would say, he did a good job of jumping on a moving train.
If the Steelers’ defense can bring that energy every week, Pittsburgh is a scary team. Week Nine was their best game of the season as a unit. The offense can put up points, even on a bad day. The defense has to hold up its end of the bargain. Jalen Ramsey’s speech to the team on Saturday night must have opened some eyes. It’s about time somebody stepped up and said something.
