TAMPA, Fla. — The Mike Evans era is officially over. After a brutal 8-9 finish in 2025 that saw the Tampa Bay Buccaneers miss the playoffs for the first time since 2019, general manager Jason Licht had to act fast. Evans signed a massive three-year, $60 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers, and cornerback Jamel Dean bolted for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Instead of panicking, the Buccaneers responded by signing 2025 Steelers MVP Kenneth Gainwell to a two-year, $14 million contract, headlining a gritty, veteran-heavy 2026 free agency class.
You cannot just replace 13,000 receiving yards overnight. With Evans in the Bay Area, Tampa Bay decided to shift their entire offensive philosophy to protect Baker Mayfield. Enter Kenneth Gainwell. The versatile running back racked up 1,023 total yards and 8 touchdowns for Pittsburgh last season. He brings an immediate pass-catching threat out of the backfield that the Buccaneers desperately lacked. Gainwell caught 73 passes last year. He will easily split the workload with Bucky Irving and keep defenses guessing.
Gainwell’s journey is pure perseverance. After grinding through the Eagles’ system and proving his worth as a true offensive engine in Pittsburgh, he finally secured the lucrative multi-year deal he deserves. He brings a contagious, underdog energy to a locker room searching for a new identity.
I stood on the sidelines during the Buccaneers’ late-season collapse last December. The humid Tampa breeze felt heavy as you could physically watch the offense stalling every time the run game hit a wall. Gainwell solves that specific problem. He turns short check-downs into explosive gains, forcing linebackers into impossible coverage situations.
The front office refused to ignore the defense. Losing Dean hurt, but Licht fired back by adding hard-hitting former Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone and massive defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson. These guys eat blockers. They do the dirty work. Robinson’s sheer size forces double teams, which will immediately free up Vita Vea and Calijah Kancey to hunt quarterbacks.
Tampa Bay also snagged Jake Browning to back up Mayfield, signed special teams ace Miles Killebrew, and took a flyer on edge rusher Al-Quadin Muhammad. These are meat-and-potatoes moves. They raise the team’s floor and establish a deeply physical culture for the upcoming training camp.
“I always talk about opportunities, and I’m taking full advantage of that. I’m just embracing it.”
— Kenneth Gainwell, Buccaneers Running Back
This is no longer a finesse team. The 2026 Buccaneers will try to win ugly in the trenches. By loading up on experienced depth, Tampa Bay set themselves up perfectly for the upcoming NFL Draft. They hold the 15th overall pick and can now target a premium wide receiver or a top-tier cornerback without reaching out of desperation. The NFC South remains wide open. If this revamped defense gels and Gainwell takes the pressure off Mayfield, the Buccaneers will absolutely challenge the Carolina Panthers for the division crown.
