Tampa Bay mayor jokingly supports changing city name to 'Tompa Bay' if Bucs win Super Bowl

Tom Brady's first season in Tampa Bay has gone about as well as anyone could have imagined, with the Buccaneers just a win away from winning their second Super Bowl in franchise history. The team's success has caused some to suggest that Tampa Bay should be renamed 'Tompa Bay' and the city's mayor joked that she is open to the idea, if the 43-year-old is able to win his seventh championship on Sunday.

"I told him, we are not discussing changing our city's name until he brings home that Lombardi trophy. So Tom and I will have that discussion in due time," Tampa Bay mayor Jane Castor said. "Yes, we will talk about that, changing 'Tampa,' since we are becoming a title town, to 'Tompa Bay.' We'll have those discussions."

There's no doubt that Brady has managed to turn the franchise around, as the Bucs had not been in the playoffs in over a decade and were coming off yet another disappointing season when Brady arrived. With Brady under center, the Bucs managed to grab a wild-card spot and now will be playing the first home Super Bowl game in NFL history. The remarkable season has already made Brady a legend in Tampa Bay, which is why nobody would probably be that mad if the city was renamed to honor Brady.

Of course, to earn the name change, Brady will need to figure out a way to beat Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, who are hoping to win their second-straight Super Bowl and are coming off a dominant win against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game. The Chiefs are considered the favorite but Brady has made a career out of defying the odds and certainly won't be intimidated headed into his 10th career Super Bowl.
