The TCU Horned Frogs exploded for five runs on seven hits in the first inning en route to a 9-4 win over the Fresno State Bulldogs Friday night at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth.
Chase Brunson led the Frogs with three hits and three RBIs as TCU won its third straight game.
Brunson put TCU in front in the first inning with a double to right center before Sam Myers drove a single up the middle for another run. Karson Bowen then singled and Sawyer Strosnider doubled for the final two runs of the inning.
The Frogs got three more in the second after Colton Griffin homered and Brunson singled to left center to drive in Isaac Cadena. Nolan Traeger then doubled for an 8-0 lead early.
The Bulldogs committed an error in the fifth and TCU jumped on the opportunity to make it 9-0 after Bowen singled to drive in his second run.
Fresno State narrowed the lead with three runs across in the seventh. A TCU error led to a pair of unearned runs before a two-out home run in the eighth made the score 9-4.
Caedmon Parker started the game for the Frogs and went four scoreless innings giving up three hits in the no-decision. Trey Newmann (1-0) got the win with 2.1 innings pitched allowing three runs, two earned, one wak and three strikeouts. Kaden Smith got two outs then Kade Eudy and Cohen Feser closed the game with an inning of work apiece.
Next up for the Frogs is Game 2 with Fresno State on Saturday afternoon as Tommy LaPour takes the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
