Terrion Arnold silenced doubters without taking a snap in loss to Chiefs

Terrion Arnold is not expected to be out for the entire season, as previously feared by the Detroit Lions. The second year cornerback is now looking down a few weeks of recovery after suffering yet another scary shoulder injury, his second of the season.

The defender hasn't racked up any takeaways this year, but it's his work in man coverage and as a cornerback that can glue himself to receivers that has impacted the Lions' secondary in a great way. His absence was always going to be felt as the team is also already down Ennis Rakestraw this season and D.J. Reed since Week 4.

That lack of coverage was fully felt in Week 6 against the Kansas City Chiefs, with the Lions giving up 30 points, 257 passing yards to Patrick Mahomes, and three passing touchdowns en route to their second loss of the season. Arnold found a way to show just how impactful he is for this Lions team, and he didn't have to leave his home.

Arnold's importance on full display in Lions' loss vs. Chiefs

Arnold might not have the numbers to back it up, but he's a big glue piece for Detroit's secondary this season. He and Reed were, and are, expected to helm a shutdown unit as the Lions look towards another postseason berth. Without him, and Reed, Detroit is stuck playing a ton of Amik Robertson, Rock Ya-Sin, and recent call-ups like Arthur Maulet and Nick Whiteside.

He's been criticized for a few errant penalties this season when he was healthy, which tend to wipe out the goodwill he should be creating with his elite coverage. As a result, it feels like he was taken for granted just a bit ahead of this loss.

Detroit can rest their laurels on their next-man up mentality all they'd like, but those players have to back up that talk against any opponent. Kansas City has been struggling in recent weeks, and it wasn't improbable that Detroit could still get a win on the road against them even with all of those backups in on defense.

Clearly, a ton of miscommunication, a lack of chemistry, and some truly poor tackling were the name of the game in Week 6. These are the basics and fundamentals, so you'd have to hope Detroit is able to clean these issues up ahead of Week 7 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and current MVP frontrunner Baker Mayfield.

If not, then Arnold's injury will just continue to grow more impactful for the Lions' NFC North standing and their ability to leave their Week 8 bye on a high note.
