Terry McLaurin 'really excited' to see what Carson Wentz achieves with Commanders

Washington Commanders star wide receiver Terry McLaurin hasn't yet had real opportunities to build chemistry with new quarterback Carson Wentz, as McLaurin spent much of the springtime away from the team amid contract negotiations that officially ended when the two sides came to terms on an agreement in late June.

McLaurin spoke openly about those talks during Wednesday's press event. Per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk, the 26-year-old also told reporters he was about to fly out for a workout with Wentz.

"One thing I think that’s stuck out about Carson, is just, he’s a very personable guy," McLaurin added about the signal-caller. "He’s somebody that, we’ve connected on a very personal level since he’s gotten here. And even throughout the process, he was reaching out to me, checking in on me. I was asking how practice was going and things like that. And that’s why I can’t wait to get out there and start throwing with him, because now we get to put the football together and we get to start to form that connection on the field. But personally, I’m really excited to see what he does."

During last month's mandatory minicamp, Washington head coach Ron Rivera noted how Wentz had already developed "rapport with some of our receivers" and spread confidence to those in the team's offense. McLaurin may have been taking care of the business side of things, but that doesn't mean he and Wentz will necessarily be starting from scratch this summer.

According to ESPN stats, McLaurin finished last season with team-highs of 77 catches, 1,053 receiving yards and five touchdowns while tracking passes mostly thrown by current backup Taylor Heinicke. McLaurin will now be hoping to bolster those numbers across the board playing alongside Wentz.
