The Texans continued making small roster adjustments today as the second week of the NFL preseason concludes. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2, Houston is planning to bring in veteran safety and special teamer George Odum and former Cowboys running back Deuce Vaughn. A player needed to be removed to make room for both on the roster, so veteran wide receiver Juwann Winfree was released.
Odum is entering his ninth season of NFL play. Initially an undrafted free agent out of Central Arkansas, he began his playing career with the Colts in 2018. He made the team’s 53-man roster as a rookie and was an immediate special teams contributor. Indianapolis even started to utilize Odum on defense, giving him his first career start in Week 11 of his rookie year and a second start in a meaningless Week 17 matchup to close the regular season.
In Odum’s sophomore campaign, the Colts gave him a lot more opportunities to rotate in on defense, but in his third season with the team, they played him almost exclusively at special teams, and Odum earned first-team All-Pro honors as a special teamer, as a result. Odum stayed with the Colts for one more season and, thanks to injuries, would log more seven starts on defense.
As a restricted free agent, Odum signed a three-year deal with the 49ers and immediately delivered on the payday with the second All-Pro season of his career — this one as a second-team special teamer. Injuries began to plague Odum in his second season in San Francisco. Stints on injured reserve limited him to 11 games in 2023 and 12 in 2024. The 49ers had signed Odum to a two-year extension after their 2023 campaign, but after two straight years with IR stints, offseason elbow surgery before the 2025 season led the team to part ways with the veteran special teams ace.
After recovering from his surgery, Odum signed back with the Colts, joining their practice squad in mid November. He was called up to the active roster a week later but only appeared in three games on the year. With an offseason to get healthy again, the Texans are hoping Odum can come in and deliver another All-Pro campaign. Vaughn will hope to join him after spending the 2025 on Denver’s practice squad and joining the UFL in the offseason.
