The Houston Texans could add another coach from the 49ers to their coaching staff. The team is expected to hire Cory Undlin as their defensive passing game coordinator, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC Houston.
Undlin would be the latest addition to a revamped coaching staff led by former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator and new head coach DeMeco Ryans.
Undlin is a two-time Super Bowl champion. He won the Lombardi Trophy as a defensive coaching assistant for the New England Patriots in 2004 and as the defensive backs coach for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017. He’s also had stints with several other teams, including the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Denver Broncos and Detroit Lions.
Last season, the 51-year-old was the pass game specialist and secondary coach for a top-ranked 49ers defense. The 2022 49ers finished first in the NFL in yards allowed per game (300.6). They also led the league in fewest points allowed (16.3).
The Texans have made plenty of personnel moves in the offseason. The team has introduced several new coaches who played a part for a 49ers team that ranked among the best in the NFL.
Along with hiring Ryans and Undlin from the 49ers, Houston also acquired Bobby Slowik as offensive coordinator, Stephen Adegoke as safeties coach and Nick Kray as chief of staff. New quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson and defensive coordinator Matt Burke will also be a part of the new-look Texans.
Undlin will bring 19 years of NFL coaching experience and knowledge to his new team. He will try to rejuvenate a Texans defense that finished 27th in yards allowed per game (379.5).
