The Houston Texans have clinched the AFC South, just as we all suspected they would. All jokes aside, they did it a lot quicker this time -- now they don't have to play an extra playoff game in Week 18 like they did against the Indianapolis Colts last season, where the winner got in the playoffs.
The Texans are set to host a playoff game, but now, with three games left in the season, they are playing for seeding. They should still try and win every game from here on out so that they can get a higher seed, which would give them a better chance at a home-field advantage should they make the AFC Championship game and Kansas City doesn't. And, the higher the seed, the worse the Wildcard matchup they should get, which is also better.
But, the thing standing in their way the rest of the season is two really good teams and one division opponent that isn't good but would love to cause chaos for the Texans. Houston plays the Kansas City Chiefs next, and the Baltimore Ravens after that before playing the Tennessee Titans to close out the year.
But, there is some bad news during the first practice day of the week. And, it has nothing to do with the Texans' injuries. Well, don't get me wrong, their injury report isn't great, but it's what's on the other side that's bad news.
Now, no one wishes injuries on the enemy, because that's just an unethical thing to do. But, when it was made aware that Patrick Mahomes was hurt against the Cleveland Browns, I'm sure there were people in Houston hoping that Mahomes would sit this game out to rest up for the postseason.
And, while he still could sit out, he was a full participant on Tuesday. But, there's still some concern there for the Chiefs. Here is what A to Z Sports' Charles Goldman had to say about the Chiefs' Tuesday practice report:
Mahomes was listed as a full participant in practice on Tuesday, which is a very good sign. However, there is one caveat. The Chiefs' first practice of the week is traditionally a light one without pads, helmets, and the like. It's closer to a walkthrough than the rigors a player might go through in a padded training camp practice. That's to say that It's not all that surprising that Mahomes was considered a full participant. Wednesday's practice will be much more telling in terms of how far along Mahomes actually is. What might be more concerning is the look on Mahomes' face as he went to test his ankle in warm-ups, which the Kansas City Star shared. He's clearly in some serious discomfort.
Hollywood Browns, the Chiefs' big free agency acquisition on the wide receiver side, was injured in the preseason and has yet to play this year. He had a good week of practice last week but didn't go. He was a full participant on Tuesday as well and could go for the Chiefs on Saturday.
