Texans make visit to Uvalde to surprise high school varsity football team

The Uvalde High School varsity football team has its first home game of the 2022 season at 7 p.m. ET on Friday. The Houston Texans are quickly approaching their regular season opener, which will take place at home against the Indianapolis Colts at 1 p.m. ET on Sept. 11.

On Thursday night, Texans head coach Lovie Smith, linebackers Kamu Grugier-Hill and Christian Kirksey and Director of Player Care and Sports Medicine Roland Ramirez -- an Uvalde native -- made a surprise visit to the Coyotes' team dinner. According to an article from the Texans' official team website, the group spent time talking with the high schoolers and "lending their support" to a community that is continuing to mourn the loss of 19 elementary school students and two teachers during May's mass shooting.

"It's an honor to be here with you all," Kirksey said as he addressed the team. "We know you're going to have a great season and we're with you every step of the way."

On Friday morning, Grugier-Hill, Kirksey, Texans Chair and CEO Cal McNair and Vice President of the Houston Texans Foundation Hannah McNair appeared on "Good Morning America" to reveal more surprises for the Uvalde High School football team.

Furthermore, per the NFL team's official team website, later on Friday "Texans Legends Travis Johnson, Kevin Walter and Jonathan Wells, TORO and Texans Cheerleaders will be on hand for special FLAG-in-Schools clinics in Uvalde." There will be 300 elementary and middle school students learning "techniques to help reinforce football fundamentals and their love of the game."

The legends will also visit the Uvalde High School team in their locker room before kickoff of Friday's home-opener.
