Texans Noncommittal On C.J. Stroud Extension

Texans GM Nick Caserio was noncommittal about Stroud’s next contract, only describing an extension as a possibility. Per Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 in Houston, the two sides discussed an extension in the spring, but nothing is considered “imminent” nor “definite” at this time.

Stroud appeared to be a future superstar following one of the most productive rookie showings in NFL history. He also continued to guide Houston to the playoffs in both 2024 and 2025, but his postseason performance has raised plenty of eyebrows.

While the Texans earned playoff victories in each of his three seasons, he’s never advanced past the divisional round. In a 2024 playoff loss to the Chiefs, Stroud didn’t find the end zone while getting sacked eight times. Then, during this past year’s playoff loss to the Patriots, Stroud tossed four interceptions.

Houston made the obvious choice of exercising Stroud’s fifth-year option this spring, ensuring he will remain under team control through at least 2027. However, the organization has taken a wait-and-see approach when it’s come to his second NFL contract. We heard in May that the front office planned to wait on extending their QB, and we heard last month that negotiations were effectively paused. There’s a belief the team will continue to evaluate Stroud throughout the 2026 campaign before investing in a big-money extension.

Fortunately, it sounds like Stroud isn’t distracted by a lack of a commitment from the franchise. While speaking with reporters yesterday, the QB said he’s focused on how he can help the team.

“Everything has been great,” Stroud said (via Wilson). “Trying to hold my bargain down the football side, doing what I should be doing as the quarterback of this team.”
