The Houston Texans (2-4) continue to dig themselves into a hole they have shown they cannot get themselves out of. The late Monday Night Football loss proved that. Coming off their bye week, and with 15 days to prepare for the now 5-2 Seahawks, showed up with no energy and no fight. The offense was dead on arrival, and were it not for the excellence of the defense, the game would have been a blowout. This loss was reminiscent of the loss to the Los Angeles Rams, where the offense had spurts of competency, the defense did its job exceedingly well, and one opposing wide receiver carved the team up. Like every other loss this season, if the offense could have moved the ball more consistently or protected CJ Stroud a little better earlier, this could be a different conversation. It reinforces the point that against the better teams in the NFL, Houston cannot compete as effectively as they did when they beat the 1-6 Tennessee Titans and 1-5 Baltimore Ravens. Those games proved the offense could function, but the four losses proved not against good teams.

Something has to give when it comes to offensive personnel. It was an offensive game plan of Nico Collins, Dalton Schultz, and no one else. Jaylin Noel made a few good catches, but other than that, it was a lot of nothing. The game plan reverted to leaning more heavily on Nick Chubb than promoting Woody Marks, who proved that when he is on the field, they have better chances of moving the ball on the ground game. And there were some absolutely mind-boggling play-calling decisions at the goal line that could have led to a tie. Multiple times, they would be in 3rd and 4th-down scenarios, and they would run it into a wall of defenders. They wouldn’t give Stroud the chance to operate. The offensive line is still the talk of everything wrong with the offense. They allowed Stroud to be pressured 31.5 percent of his drop-backs, three sacks, and seven QB hits. They could not open up run lanes, and this was the third game Stroud was either second or first in rushing yards. The unit just has not performed well. Stroud is still far from the main problem, but he cannot continue to do what he does when he is pressured. A lot of times, he runs backward away from pressure that leads to long yardage losses, and last night, a near safety. He has to be better about throwing it away or trying to run forward when possible. He has to rally this offense and get the unit working the way we saw against the Titans and Ravens.

The Texans have to get it together for their next game against the San Francisco 49ers. If this trend continues, it may be time for changes in Houston.
