Texans RB Joe Mixon’s Preseason Status in Jeopardy after Latest Injury News

Mixon was placed on the non-football injury list to begin training camp last week. Details behind his injury are still unclear, however, this latest update puts the 28-year old's preseason status in jeopardy.

After spending his first seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, Mixon was dealt to the Texans last March, who promptly signed him to a three-year $25.5 Million extension. In his first season in Houston, Mixon rushed for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns despite missing three weeks early in the season with an ankle injury. He also added 36 receptions for 309 yards and a receiving touchdown on the way to earning his second Pro Bowl nod.

With Mixon out, former Cleveland Browns great Nick Chubb is likely to get a bulk of the work with the first team offense. The Texans signed the free agent to a one-year, $2.5 Million deal last month. Chubb's last two seasons with Cleveland were shortened by injuries, but he believes that's all behind him. When healthy, Chubb was among the best running backs in the league. In his first five seasons, Chubb rushed for 6,341 yards and 48 touchdowns.

With fellow backup Dameon Pierce on the physically unable to perform list, Woody Marks, the Texans fourth-round pick out of USC in April, could also be in line for more playing time. Marks rushed for 1,133 yards and nine touchdowns with the Trojans last season. The shifty back was also a receiving threat throughout his five seasons with USC and Mississippi State, compiling 1,546 yards on 261 receptions.

According to Rapoport, the Texans plan to re-evaluate Mixon closer to the regular season, however it's possible he misses Week 1. The Texans open their 2025 campaign at the Los Angeles Rams on September 7.
