As we all know, the Detroit Lions play on Thanksgiving every single year. It's been a long standing tradition since 1934,. That was fine and everyone understood what it was and it was all good. Then the NFL got a little greedy with the Lions.
Now they'll be playing on Christmas Day for just the third time in franchise history. The two previous times were in 1994 and 1999. Not only are they playing on Christmas, but they have to go do it on the road in Minnesota.
That's pretty bad, and some of the Lions' players aren't too happy about it. Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown had Lions rookie Isaac TeSlaa on the St. Brown Bros. podcast on Wednesday and had this to say about the schedule.
"Tell your family (expletive) you." St. Brown said. "There's no family time. We got Thanksgiving, we got Christmas, we probably have New Year's Day practice. Ain't no family going on."
Something in there didn't even occur to us when the schedule came out last week. The Lions will play on Christmas on a Thursday and then get a few days off, but will have to come back the following Wednesday, which is New Year's Eve, for the first practice of the week. That means Thursday, New Year's Day, is also a practice day.
The Lions are playing the Bears on the road, the Sunday after Christmas, and that's likely to be a big game. Even if the game got moved up to Saturday, the Lions are still missing New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
That's pretty rough. The Lions aren't getting a holiday to enjoy until Valentine's Day after the Super Bowl. If things go really right this year, it could be the best Valentine's Day ever, though.
